Vitiligo is a condition in which the skin turns white due to the loss of melanocytes. These cells produce melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its characteristic color. (Melanocytes also impart color to the retina of the eye and the mucous membrane tissues lining the inside of the mouth, nose, genital and rectal areas). In vitiligo, the melanocytes are mysteriously destroyed, leaving de-pigmented patches of skin on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo may also turn white.

Vitiligo is a common skin disorder. It occurs in 1-2% of people and affects both sexes and all races equally. Vitiligo is never present at birth. It crops up between the ages of 10 and 30 in about half of cases and before age 40 in 95% of cases. More than 30% of people with vitiligo have a family history of the disorder, pointing to the presence of genetic factors capable of contributing to the condition.

The easily visible symptom of vitiligo in children is depigmentation of parts of skin that occurs on the extremities. Although white spots or patches are small in the beginning, they often increase in size and keep on changing in shape.

In non-segmental vitiligo (NSV), you can see some form of symmetry in location of the patches where depigmentation occurs. New patches start appearing over time and can be generalized over large portions of the body or localized to a particular area. Vitiligo where little pigmented skin remains is referred to as vitiligo universalis. NSV can come about at any age, unlike segmental vitiligo, which is far more prevalent in teenage years.

Classes of Non-Segmental Vitiligo in Infants

Generalized Vitiligo : the most common pattern, wide and randomly distributed areas of depigmentation

Universal Vitiligo : depigmentation encompasses most of the body

Focal Vitiligo : one or a few scattered macules in one area, most common in children

Acrofacial Vitiligo : fingers and periorificial areas

Mucosal Vitiligo: depigmentation of only the mucous membranes

Segmental Vitiligo Symptoms in Kids

Segmental vitiligo (SV) different in appearance.

Its treatment is different from that of Non-Segmental Vitiligo.

Tends to affect areas of skin that are related to dorsal roots from the spine.

It spreads much more rapidly than NSV and, without treatment.

How to Treat Vitiligo

Vitiligo problems are affecting a lot of people around the world. There is no age limit. There various way to treat this problem but there are also a lot of side effects related to vitiligo treatment. There is a need for treatment as people are losing their self esteem due to this skin disease. However there is no perfect solution of a problem. In this article I would like to stress on these points

Scarring

Hard to swallow

Temporary solution

Expensive

The photograph mentioning : Vitiligo Stem Cell Therapy

1. Scarring:

This is one of the side effects that people most fear of. Modern treatment such as surgery and transplant of skin will cause permanent scar to the patient. It is because every surgery bring an certain risk of scarring. Doctors use the latest technology to perform a surgery or transplant. This is because the lack of experience and carelessness of the doctor. Therefore, they should consult a registered professional skin doctor in treating this problem. However there are no doctor who can guarantee 100% scar free surgery.

2. Hard to swallow:

There are medicines specially produced to treat this problem. Medicine produced can be either traditional way or modern way. In most traditional way to treat vitiligo, the medicine is very bitter. Most people cannot stand the taste of the medicine. It is because of the herbs and other ingredient used to produce this type of medicine.

Here is picture mentioning : Vitiligo Surgery In India

3. Temporary solution:

Most of the treatment brings only temporary solution to the people. This skin sickness will be likely to occur again on the skin. Another problem is that the lotion or cream will lose its effectiveness if you do not continue to apply it.

4. Expensive:

Other than traditional way that is less effective towards this problem, all the other way is very expensive. This includes a medicine from pharmacy and surgery. Not all of us can bear the expensive cost to treat vitiligo.

Information regarding vitiligo treatment is available in the article. You can find more details on Acne treatment website. Balajee Kannan Health Consultant

Vitiligo What It Is and How To Treat It

Vitiligo is a relatively uncommon skin disease, estimated to affect about one percent of the entire world popularity. The primary symptom of vitiligo is white patches of skin, which may grow to cover large parts of the body or even the entire body. This disease is most frustrating when it is on visible areas of skin, such as the face.

The symptoms of vitiligo are caused by non-functioning melanocytes, which are the cells in your skin responsible for producing melanin, the primary pigment in your skin. When the melanocytes are shut down and melanin production stops, your skin loses its pigmentation, and turns white.

The pic mentioning : Pigmentation Loss Symptoms

Doctors and researchers are not yet completely certain exactly what causes vitiligo. They do know that genetic factors play a role in a person’s susceptibility. They also believe that it is, or can be, an auto immune disease, meaning that your body’s immune system attacks and damages your melanocytes, which then causes the vitiligo.

Since doctors are not certain of the cause, most treatment options involve treating the symptoms. There are several treatments that may be used to attempt to get your melanocytes to resume production of melanin.

One treatment involves grafting healthy skin (with functioning melanocytes) into the affected areas. Other methods involve using ultraviolet light to stimulate the patient’s melanocytes. One of the most promising treatment options uses a laser to stimulate the melanocytes. This method is showing excellent results with minimal side effects.

The pics on : Vitiligo Symptoms Treatment

There are also natural approaches to treating vitiligo, most notably herbal and homeopathic approaches. Both herbal and homeopathic approaches involve attempting to address the root problems, usually relating to the immune system, digestive system, liver, kidneys, and also using topical products to target the skin itself.

The truth of the matter, however, is that there is no cure for vitiligo. Treatments are available to treat the symptoms, but there is no cure to address and remove the root problems.

My daughter is now 12 years old. In February 1999 on the skin, in low part of stomach, on hips and on the back along the backbone line, we have observed small bright discolor spots that started to appear and to grow. Doctors (dermatologists) said that it is VITILIGO. They made many laboratory tests in hospital but they didn’t find reasons. (The tests of thyroid included).

Doctors tried external treatment direct oh the skin, next they tried SUCCUS HIPERICI oral treatment and PSORALEN+UVA radiation but as a result of this treatment, skin became to blush and they had to stop it. The spots didn’t disappear. For next several months nothing new happened until February 2000. Since this moment number of spots and their dimensions was increased, especially on the stomach area and tree days ago on the neck.

I would like to know, is it because of a grown up period (puberty?)? Is any real help for her? How to stop this process on the skin? Please, send me any information what I ought to do? What do you think about oil from seeds of “psoralea corilifolia” from India? Did someone have any good results?

Answers to How To Stop Vitiligo Spots?

You know I always wondered the same thing about puberty as this fellow mentions. Both of my girls started to develop their vitiligo at the onset of puberty. They say it is not linked to hormones, etc, but I will always wonder. Now that she is 15, I always hope that it will stabilize. She does have progression but it seems to be very slow. There are so many variables.

Mine started with puberty as well (around 14 years of age)… I am currently on hormone treatment (not vit-related) and I haven’t noticed any change in my vitiligo since I started this treatment (approx 5-6 months).

Me too. I wonder about the particular stages in life being responsible for the onset of vitiligo myself. And you said it – so many variables! We just don’t have anywhere to start from.

Also any ideas on how good is protpic ointment for treating vitiligo?

Answer 1 – Time taken to Cure Vitiligo

My kid has vitiligo too, and we uses protopic 0/03% twice a day(morning/evening). I am really worry about her future, and because this is new treatment like doctor said. We only use for 3 days until now.

So i am really anxious to know how good protopic treat the white patches, and how long does it take effect. God bless my kid. Thanks, Robert

Answer 2 – Time taken to Cure Vitiligo

I think it takes different time for different people. Don’t expect overnight success or you will be crushed. It can take months. I’ve been using Protopic for 10 months and still NOTHING.

But stress and impatience only make it worse. The key to success, IMHO, is PATIENCE. Pritopic is useless without it. Good luck Owen.

Answer 3 – Time taken to Cure Vitiligo

Hi… my daughter saw doctor today, and he gives us a other one called elidel, and mentioned this one may better than protopic. Because my daughter is only four years and half, and he mentioned it may be regarding another problem, and finally it will be changed when she grows up. right now we use elidel instead of the protopic to try three weeks to see what is happened.

My question is that did anybody try to use elidel to treat kids vitiligo, or any case like the skin color will be changed back like doctor said.

I decided if the things will not be changed, we will change to use protopic to see what happened. The advantages are my kid is too young, and she did not know the things and very happy this time, and this is the most important thing for treatment. God bless my kid Thanks, Robert

Comment – How long does it take to cure vitiligo?

It’s been over a month now since I started applying protopic and I have seen some very minor improvements as a result of it. My doctor sees this as a positive sign and has recommended that I continue this treatment for another two months.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my original post.

Answer – How To Cure Vitiligo?

Number one..there is no “cure”

Number two..vitiligo is NOT an allergy..it’s an auto immune defciency of the blood & immune system that causes the white blood cells to see the melanin ( skin coloring) as “foreign” and therefore they attack and remove the melanin.

Go to www.vitiligosupport.com they have FAQ there for any questions you may have about treatments..vitamins..and related illnesses that sometimes go hand in hand with vitiligo. I have had vitiligo since 1996………and now about 60 percent of my skin is depigmented or white…I chose to continue depigmenting the rest of my normal colored skin..but please go to the site..you will find answers..and seek a dermatologist who can better help your mother with a treatment. Narrow band UVB works extremely well from what I have heard from my own doctor. At any rate..I wish you luck – Frannie
